Athur Shaxted

This was my father's first breakthrough in the search for the family's roots. Arthur Shaxted had two children Ernest (my grandather) and Aurthur Henry. Authur Henry (my father's uncle) had emigrated to America and was unknown to my father until he started to research the family.

Arthur had several brothers and sisters, all older than him; Thomas, Maria, Polly, Louise and Albert (information from 1851 census of Minster). He is known to have lived at Capel hill, Updown, Kent and then 29 (formerly14) Setterfield Road, Margate, Kent. He apparently built four terraced houses, including 29 Setterfield Road, and a detatched house in St Peters Way. Where he got the money from is unclear. He also bought a house in Ramsgate and 16 Clarendon Road, Margate, where he was at the time of his death.

He is known to have worked as a coachman for Sir Joseph Farmer at Capel Hill, Margate.

Arthur married Mary Terry Paine in June 1886. Mary Terry Paine lived to the age of 84 years, dying during the second world war in 1941. Some information about the Paine roots is known, going back two further generations. I understand that the Paine name lives on in the American side of the family.

The source of this data is Aurthur's birth certificate, his grave stone, his marriage certificate and information from his son Ernest.
